Upwork shows the withdrawal methods available for your country in your account settings, in the section where you manage how you get paid. The names of menus change from time to time, so treat your own account as the source of truth.
Know when money becomes available
Earnings do not reach your balance the moment a client pays. Fixed-price work and hourly work each go through a review or security period before the funds can be withdrawn. Check the dates shown next to each payment so you can plan around them.
Compare the methods offered to you
- Fee: some methods charge a flat fee per withdrawal, some a percentage, and some are free above a certain amount.
- Exchange rate: if the money is converted into rupees, ask what rate is used. The rate often costs more than the fee. Our guide on reading a rate quote shows how to work out the real cost.
- Speed: from your request to the cash in your account.
- Minimums: small balances may not be withdrawable until they pass a threshold.
Make your details match
The name on your Upwork profile, your tax information, and the receiving bank account should all match. Differences in spelling or order of names are a common reason a withdrawal is rejected or held for review.
Finish the tax and identity steps
Upwork asks freelancers outside the US for tax information and identity verification. Complete these early, because unfinished forms can block withdrawals.
When no method suits you
If none of the available methods works well for you, a payout service can be an option, provided it quotes the rate and fee in writing and never asks for your password or codes. Read our 10 safety checks first.
